Take action with the Votes at 16 coalition today to ask Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) to back a motion supporting votes at 16.

We want MSPs to add their name to the motion to show that the Scottish Parliament wants the voting age lowered to 16 in Scotland and call on the UK Parliament to recognise this fact.

Kevin Stuart MSPKevin Stewart, SNP MSP for Aberdeen Central and official supporter of the Votes at 16 coalition has put forward a motion ‘Support the Votes at 16 Coalition’. MSPs can add their names to this motion to show that they support lowering the voting age. Kevin told us that he supports our campaign because:

“I have always believed that people should have the right to vote at age 16. At 16 folk can get married, work and pay taxes so why shouldn’t they be able to vote for the politicians that make the decisions that affect their lives?”

The Scottish National Party, Scottish Green Party and the Scottish Liberal Democrat Party are all members of the Votes at 16 Coalition.

Last year 16 and 17 year-olds voted for the first time in Scotland in elections of representatives to Scottish Health boards, who oversee the work of local health services. This was allowed by legislation passed by the Scottish Parliament in 2009. The UK Parliament currently has the legislative power to change the voting age for Scottish Parliament elections.

Dear [name of MSP],

I am writing to ask you to add your signature to Motion 313 ‘Support the Votes at 16 Coalition’ tabled by Kevin Stewart MSP.

This motion asks “That the Parliament commends the organisers of the Votes at 16 Coalition for their efforts in trying to secure the vote for 16 and 17-year-olds; notes that countries including Austria, Brazil and Ecuador have an enfranchisement age of 16; recognises that young people in this age group may work, pay taxes, get married and join the armed forces; considers that they are disenfranchised by current electoral law, and calls on the UK Government to legislate to enfranchise all 16 and 17-year-olds in all elections”.

I believe we need to show that the Scottish Parliament wants votes at 16 and call on the UK Parliament to recognise this.

I am a supporter of the Votes at 16 Coalition, a campaign calling for votes at 16 in all public elections across the UK. Young people, politicians and supporters across Scotland are joining the coalition on their website, Facebook and Twitter to show they are ready for votes at 16.

In addition to adding your name to Motion 313, I call on you to become an official supporter of the Votes at 16 Coalition by signing up here or emailing votesat16@byc.org.uk

Yours sincerely,
