Council set to give vote of confidence to votes at 16

Redcar & Cleveland Council in North East England is set to give its backing to votes at 16 at its next full council meeting on Thursday 21st July. The council will consider a motion put by one of its cabinet members Tristan Learoyd, and seconded by council leader George Dunning, which will give the borough’s support to our national campaign.

This follow a campaign by the Redcar and Cleveland Members of the UK Youth Parliament.

Councillor Tristan Learoyd said: “Young people are vital to the political process and the council is sending out a very clear message that we value the input and potential of young people to shape the borough’s future”.

George Dunning, Labour Leader of the Council said: “Redcar & Cleveland is a progressive council and we not only want to develop services that help young people, but we want their future involvement in the life of the borough. We hope this motion sends out a very clear signal as to our commitment”.

Temi Sobowale, UK Youth Parliament Redcar & Cleveland stated: ”With the Votes at 16 motion being proposed to councillors, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council are taking one step forward towards lowering the voting age while additionally, empowering the youths of Redcar and Cleveland. Should the motion be passed, history will be made for the Redcar and Cleveland constituency of UK Youth Parliament!”

Cameron Brown, UK Youth Parliament Redcar & Cleveland “Not only are 16 and 17 year olds by law able to make complex decisions and take on wide ranging responsibilities, they are also showing in practice that they want to make a positive difference. Locking them out is patronising: it relies on out-dated views about young people’s capacities. Seeing Redcar & Cleveland council taking steps in the right direction is excellent news“.
